Maggi Thomson

Maggi is a professional nurse who originally studied biological sciences to honours level. She then became a registered general nurse qualifying in 1983. In 2003 she trained as a lecturer in nursing gaining a PG Cert in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Whilst practising as a nurse, Maggi first gained general nursing and ward management experience in various specialties including general medicine, general surgery and oncology.
In 1998 Maggi worked in neurosurgical intensive care at the Southern General Hospital in Glasgow. In 1999 she was appointed to a research post and became Clinical Studies Coordinator at the university withing the Department of Neurosurgery working with Professor Graham Teasdale and a team of neuropsychologists. During this time she became involved in longer term care of patients and families who had suffered moderate to severe head injury. This involved physical assessment and some simple psychological testing to measure outcome. Although not formally involved in their care she often identified needs and resources for patients and families.
After a career break Maggi took a post as a lecturer in nursing studies at Glasgow Caledonian University where she worked until 2006. She then commenced work as an independent case manager. Her special interest is in clients with brain injury. Her experience includes case managing clients with orthopaedic trauma, traumatic amputation, brain injury and spinal injury. She has been involved in preparing case management plans, setting up large care packages, training carers and support workers, liaising with and supporting families, managing work placements and managing a care team. Maggi prepares quantification reports for medico-legal purposes, including immediate needs assessments and case management reports. She is a member of BABICM, and SHIF. Maggi has been an associate with Case Management Services since early 2009
